GAPS stage 3

Oh hello there. You’ve found some very old content. Please read the disclaimer on this page before thinking I’m still a total sheep who has been sucked into a bone-broth worshipping fad diet. Been there, learned from that and am now a much less rigid human.

The Stage I’ve been waiting for. This is the story of a girl reunited with her beloved avocado.

Stage 3 is where life gets a whole lot easier. One word; avocado.

  • It adds something raw back into the mix
  • It can accompany meat
  • It can accompany roasted pumpkin
  • It can be eaten with sauerkraut – also allowed on stage 3. Before this you are only allowed the juice (remind me again why I’m doing this?)
  • It can be eaten by itself, with nothing else added (yes, really)
  • You can mix the humble avo with ground cinnamon & make pudding!

Something else allowed on stage 3 is pumpkin pancakes. These pancakes are nutritious enough to eat as a meal by themselves – provided adequate protein, veggies, broth and fermented foods have been eaten at other meals and snacks.

Stage 3 makes taking food to College much easier. No worrying about broth or soup spilling or leaking in my bag. Just an avocado, a spoon and a container of coconut or ghee roasted pumpkin. The dream.

Now, not to get too detailed. I sense at least a few of you have a wee bit of decorum (unlike yours truly). Stay with me. Stage 3 has done wonders for my (cough, cough) plumbing issues. The pipes are blocked no more. It turns out that the whey and yoghurt were causing stagnation. They have been removed from the menu for the time being.

The sauerkraut and avocado combo, as well as the new brand of probiotics that I’m taking, are working a treat. I feel like a normal, functioning human again. Dreamy.

I started stage 4 yesterday by trying a slice of homemade meatloaf made from chicken livers (and hearts – who am I?), onion and garlic. It went down dandily with broccoli and avocado, followed by my favourite soup – pumpkin cooked in marrow broth, blended until creamy and smooth.

Speaking of onion, this is a food that I have been reacting to for several years – 2 months of GAPS and now no reaction. Serious men in serious suits use the word ‘progress’ a darn lot. If they’re referring to eating onion without blowing up to the size of a small football field, I respect their choice of words. Progress, progress, progress.

That makes two noticeably positive changes to my system. This protocol – as crazy as I sometimes think I am for doing it – ain’t just some fad.

So far GAPS has been easy to stick to because my body has been craving only bone broth, bone marrow, pumpkin, avocado, steamed cruciferous veggies and not much else. I have fallen in love with bone marrow. The taste is so beautiful that I want to cry. Does this put a spin on the term ’emotional eater’. Or am I absorbing hormones from the cow remnants I’m eating? Time will tell.
