Stepping it up

Oh hello there. You’ve found some very old content. Please read the disclaimer on this page before thinking I’m still a total sheep who has been sucked into a bone-broth worshipping fad diet. Been there, learned from that and am now a much less rigid human.

I know in my last post I said that my next post would be ‘a day on my plate’ post to show my more varied, non-soup GAPS meals, however there’s been a slight change of plans.

Kirsty from Kultured Wellness thinks she might have an answer to my last few niggling health concerns.

She reckons I need to get my body into a state of ketosis (complete fat-burning mode) to starve the lingering bad bugs in my gut (they don’t have mitochondrias and can’t burn fat as an energy source).

Update (modern times): Dear Rach, don’t take dietary advice from a health coach. Even if she has a fancy name like ‘microbiome consultant’. No matter how desperate you are. Please. Just don’t.

This means proteins (from quality broth, meats, eggs, fish and a few activated nuts), beneficial fats (especially coconut oil) and non-starchy vegetables only (not even my beloved butternut or beetroot … but I can still have avocado and cauliflower mash so I’ve convinced myself it will be somewhat tolerable).

I’m going to pee on these special sticks from the pharmacy that will tell me when I’m in ketosis and then it’s a waiting game. Waiting to starve all the bad bugs and watch my die-off disappear for good! And then I can eat pumpkin again (the only carb I have a true, undeniable attachment to … butternut and I have been through thick and thin together!)

To assist the process I’m going to be taking raw garlic cloves and counteracting the intense detox it induces my taking chlorella, a green powder that assists in heavy metal detoxification.

Update (October 2016): the garlic burned my mouth, made me stink and didn’t really feel good so I didn’t keep this up. I now take spirulina daily in my morning smoothie for liver detox support.

I also have one other homework task … (you might want to sit down for this one) …

COFFEE ENEMAS!

Yep, flushing some home-brewed organic coffee up my rear, all in the name of good health. I know it sounds scary, but it’s going to assist my body in expelling the lingering toxins. It’s safe (so long as I’m hygienic), can be done in the comfort of my own bathroom, is cleansing for my liver and actually isn’t the big deal us westerners make it out to be.

Disclaimer: this isn’t advice and I’m not saying that everyone should do coffee enemas! They can be dangerous if performed incorrectly and not all bodies will thrive with them. Unless you really need some detoxification assistance because of a medical condition, try to use fresh air, quality sleep, real food, filtered water and Epsom salt baths to facilitate healthy detoxification.

Finally, I’m getting a genetic test to detect whether or not I’ve got any genes that further affect my detoxification pathways. I’m really hoping I don’t but either way, I’d rather know and be pro-active, than be willfully blind to problems I could do something about.

So after I finish off the butternut pumpkin and 2 fresh young coconuts in my fridge (and when my enema kit arrives … exciting times!) I’ll be stepping it up and finally implementing the missing pieces to my healing puzzle.

I’ve said for ages that sugar and carbs aren’t my friend (with a few exeptions here and there of course), however by making mistake #1, I’d convinced myself that I ‘should’ try to introduce more natural sugars into my diet, becuase I ‘should’ be able to handle them now. Guess it’s just another reminder to all of us … TRUST YOUR INTUITION and don’t be led or influenced by hypothosized ‘shoulds’.

Furthermore with the coffee enemas, the intuition and willingness to do one has been playing on my mind for a while now. I saw this video two and a half years ago and was one click away from ordering an enema kit, when mum freaked out at the idea and proclaimed that ‘NO ENEMAS WILL BE CONDUCTED UNDER HER ROOF!’. As a then 17-year old I felt I had to respect her wishes. Thankfully she now understands just how important this is for my long-term health and is more on-board, still completely squirmish, but on-board nonetheless.

Before I sign off, I just want to say that I’m not demonising carbohydrates or sugars, nor am I suggesting that you start flushing coffee up your ass. I’ve done a lot of research into ketosis and on enemas, and considering my current state of Heath, am convinced that this really is something that could work for me. I’m not trying to be ‘trendy’ by getting tests run or cutting out a major macronutrient because I read a few articles on the internet.

Always do your research before embarking on anything new (unless it’s something uber practical like eating real food, in that case just go for it!). Get educated, ask loads of questions and if you’re unsure about something or doing anything you’re unfamiliar with, seek the help and guidance of someone with more knowledge and wisdom than you currently have. The more of us that make informed, empowered decisions about our health, the more we can help to give the world of traditional medicine the respect it deserves. It has lost a lot of credibility becuase of media hype, people taking things to dangerous extremes and not using common sense.

Be wise about things, and as always, let your intuition guide you. Find a practitioner that resonates with your philosophy and be willing to do your own research too. Don’t be complient now, your health is your divine responsibility – own it!

Yours in hopeful healing, spoonfuls of coconut oil and coffee enema anticipation,
