A Very Honest Bio

Howdy Friends,

I am DELIGHTED that you’ve stopped by.

Just me hanging out with my first-born book ‘baby’, Periods, Poo & A Glorious You. Yes, that is a uterus. Thanks for asking. Photo credit.

I promised you a very honest bio, so, that’s exactly what you’re going to get.

Shall we?

My name is Rachel Favilla (but, all of my favourite humans call me Rach) and I am what you would call an ‘accidental’ business woman.

You: What’s an accidental business woman

Me: Brilliant question, I’ll explain.

When I was 18 and finished high school I was bored, so I started a blog (as you do).

You: Is that why your ancient posts sound cringy and cliched?

Me: Yes. I was practically a child and yet to find my literary trademarks.

Me (at 18): I’ll just create a website … I mean, how hard can it be? Next minute: WTF is a widget?

When I was 20 and finished my yoga teacher training, I realised that most gigs required me to have an ABN, so I applied for one … and (whilst doing so) figured my website and business should have the same name.

Me: I swear this wasn’t part of the plan you guys. It kinda just happened.

You: Your business ‘just kinda happened?’

Me: In a nutshell, yeah.

Me (at 20): And that children, is why most people write business plans. Then again, I’m not ‘most people’.

Around this same time, I started writing my first book, Periods, Poo & A Glorious You, which I then published at 22 (the same age I was when I finished my Bachelor degree in Nutritional & Dietetic Medicine). What a time!

Conveniently, I already had a website to sell her through.

Cheers past-tense Rach (it’s almost as if you knew).

You: Let me guess. You wrote that book by accident too.

Me: How did you know?

You: I was joking.

Me (at 22): Look, I’d start planning my future more strategically, but when I allow life to take the wheel instead, magic always seems to find me. I mean, look at that BOOK! Look at that COVER! The fallopian tube is HUGGING the poo!!! One word: MAGIC! Photo credit.

At 23, I realised that my #1 passion is humorous health education. I adore using comedy to educate folks about all things mind, body, spirit, stars and nut butter.

So, I wrote another book (which was just as unexpected as the first one) and ended up turning it into an affordable and neatly packaged 10-month program …
Because it’s me and I’m spontaneous and of course I did.
But, even then, something still wasn’t quite right.

You: Um, a complete and total lack of vision?

Me: Precisely, where on Earth was I going with all of this passion?

Like, it’s lovely that I keep writing books and all, but I really ought to grow up and get a stable day job, right? Photo credit.

Just before my 24th birthday, it dawned on me: I am a teacher. I always have been (at heart), I just didn’t realise it. Besides, my parents are both teachers and [when I was younger] it felt like far too obvious a career choice . . . and I pride myself on NOT being obvious!

But, there’s no denying that my favourite part of being a Holistic Clinical Nutritionist is the educational side of things and witnessing my clients evolve their outlooks and understandings.
It’s much the same story with writing and yoga teaching.
I love combining science, soul and satire to help others learn, laugh, stretch, eat and breathe their way to robust, enchanting health.

You: You do realise that teaching is A LOT, right?

Me: Of course, I’ve heard ALL the horror stories (BOTH of my parents are teachers, remember?). But, who were we ever kidding? I am the product of two teachers … 1 + 1 = 2.

Besides, if I don’t have a class to teach, I end up teaching the entire digestive process from start to finish (using poetry, song, dance and so many hand gestures that no one would ever doubt that I am Italian) to my cat, who isn’t as impressed as I’d like.

I suppose I was on the right track all along. It just took a nutrition degree, 2 books, 4 years of yoga teaching, high-school tutoring and volunteering in primary classrooms to FINALLY find my calling. Photo credit.

PS: I also really love performing and making others laugh, and there’s a performative aspect to teaching that you just don’t get in many other professions. Bonus.

Maybe I did have a plan all along. It was to educate others about health, nutrition and (insert all my other passions here) in an original, entertaining and undeniably hilarious manner. I just couldn’t figure out how to tie all of my skills, dreams and interests into one neat little job description. Until now, that is. Photo credit.
This is probably a fitting time to mention that I almost died of an autoimmune disease as a teenager. After using nutritional and lifestyle medicine to put myself into remission, I wanted to teach others how to prevent autoimmune disease (and other conditions that come with that territory: disordered eating, anxiety, depression etc.) BEFORE they got sick. I’m ALL about prevention, y’all.
Hence, I chose to be a nutritionist, author, yogi and health educator.

You: Did you just say y’all?

Me: If it’s any consolation, even I am judging me.

I also have a spiritual side and am obsessed with all things astrology (I’m actually a professional astrologer as well), fate and intuition.

So, being the ‘accidental’ businesswoman that I am, I decided to start offering astrology readings as a service as well.
I figured, why not? I ADORE reading birth charts and genuinely want to share the gift of astrology with anyone who is interested in and open to learning more. For me, teaching others about astrology can be described in one word: Ikigai (doing: what you’re good at, what you enjoy, what the world needs and what you can be paid for).
Just another picture of me looking happy about my Ikigai-adjacent career choices. Photo credit.

I may be busy teaching, but you can still get in contact with me for readings, tutoring* and consults by filling in a contact form (bottom of this page).

*I have been tutoring Year 12 (SACE, in South Australia) Nutrition Students with great success since 2016.

Please check out my full range of services here.

Truthfully, though, the most efficient and affordable way I can help you is through my books.

Including my third book, which was the most spontaneous of them all*

You: Third book??? How … when??? Me: Lockdown 2.0. Photo credit.
*Well, until my fourth book came along that is. Photo credit.

You: A fourth book? Really?

Me: Yeah, look. It started out as a Christmas present for my best friend, and kind of escalated from there.

You: Your friends get personalised books for Christmas?

Me: If they’re lucky, yeah.

You: Is it (book 4) any good?

Me: Don’t tell the others, but it might just be THE best.

You: I better get all four, just to be safe.

Me: Splendid idea, here’s the link. Happy reading.

You: Ugh, I don’t read ebooks. Are the last 3 available in paperback.

Me: You aren’t the first one to ask me this, so I worked my butt off to format them into traditional paperbacks. You can find the tangible versions of my ebooks here (you’re welcome).

My four [delightfully hilarious] books are sure to provide you with the heart, humour and health education that you are most likely craving.
I have poured my sweet [and at times sassy] soul into these babies, ensuring that you will feel like I am right there with you as you devour each page (in a non-weird way, of course).
I adore my books so much that even I re-read them.

Me: Is that weird?

You: A little, but I guess that’s saying something.

Me: I think it says A LOT. Anyway …

Shout out to my wizard of a photographer Sarah for capturing me and my paperback darlings. OBSESSED. Photo credit.

I would LOVE for you to join me over on Instagram where I do my best to make you laugh and feel AUTHENTICALLY inspired.

For anything else, such as an astrology reading (or astrology circle – ideal for a birthday party or girls night in), a nutrition consult, or tutoring – ideal for high-school/uni students), PLEASE don’t be a stranger. I WANT to hear from you.
Simply send me a cheerful message using the contact form below and I WILL get back to you as SOON as I can. Hugs x

Please check your spam box for my reply, in case your email provider is super-judgemental and deems me spam (rude, but these things happen).
